The US Open 2020 will be a Grand Slam experience that will probably be a completely new one for everyone involved. There are, for example, the restrictive safety measures, such as the request to stay in a bubble, the empty stands in the Flushing Meadows stadiums or the limited entourage of athletes who will start in New York City.

But all of this caused hardly any headwind. Sure, because it serves to guarantee the safety of the players, of course, it should minimize the likelihood of a COVID-19 outbreak at the second Grand Slam of the year as much as possible. Another measure that caused a lot more outcry was the cancellation of the qualification for the women's and men's competition.

Series of cancellations by the women

Accordingly, only those players will be allowed to start at the Grand Slam who have "earned" it due to their world ranking position. One of these players will be Barbara Haas, world number 137. and number one women in Austria. The 24-year-old benefited from the numerous cancellations in the women's field and was able to secure her permanent place in Flushing Meadows.

Just yesterday, Belinda Bencic , number eight in the women's tennis world, already the fifth top 10 player, announced that she would not travel to the USA. The world number one, Ashleigh Barty, and the defending champion, Bianca Andreescu, will also be absent from New York City. Good for Haas, because only because of the many rejections the Austrian slipped into the main field of the major in the USA.
