The 24-year-old, who missed Rafael Nadal (Spain) in a dramatic final in five sets last year, is still without a set loss in the tournament. Never before has a player succeeded in winning the US Open without dropping a set.

In the semifinals, Medvedev will face either the Austrian Dominic Thiem (No. 2) or Alex de Minaur (No. 21) from Australia. The crux of the quarter-finals against Rublew was the tie-break in the first set, in which Medvedev blocked three set balls. Rublev reacted frustrated, he didn't get a break chance in the entire match. "That was his chance to usurp the match," said Eurosport expert Boris Becker about the first set. "He knew that if he didn't win the first set it would be a difficult journey, and that's exactly how it was."

The top German player Zverev had already reached the semi-finals on Tuesday. The number five seeded Hamburg will play against the Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta for his first Grand Slam final on Friday.
