The grapes are hanging high at the 2022 Grand Slam tournaments when it comes to Alizé Cornet. Simona Halep in Melbourne, Jelena Ostapenko in Roland Garros and most recently Iga Swiatek in Wimbledon had to have this experience. And now it has caught Emma Raducanu too. The defending champion from Great Britain lost 6-3 and 6-3 to Cornet in the first match of the night session at Louis Armstrong Stadium on Tuesday. This will see Raducanu drop out of the top 80 in the WTA world rankings.

Meanwhile, Jule Niemeier prevented a collective exit from the German tennis professionals in the first round of the US Open. The 23-year-old from Dortmund was the only one of the eight professionals who competed in the individual competitions for men and women to clear the opening hurdle. The Wimbledon quarter-finalist prevailed 7: 6 (7: 3), 6: 4 against former Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin from the USA.

Petkovic loses to Bencic

Andrea Petkovic's Grand Slam career is now over after a painful opening defeat. The 34-year-old lost to the Swiss Olympic champion Belinda Bencic after a competitive performance 2: 6, 6: 4, 4: 6. Petkovic had announced before her 48th major that the hard court event in her adopted home of New York would be her last appearance on the big stage.

Laura Siegemund also failed in the first round at the US Open. The 34-year-old from Metzingen lost to the Romanian Sorana Cirstea 4: 6, 4: 6. On the opening day, Wimbledon semi-finalist Tatjana Maria had already lost.

While Niemeier is still there, the second round of men's singles at the US Open will take place without German participants for the first time since 1984.
