US Open: Dominic Thiem is "on the right track"

On Monday Thiem completed his first light training session in Flushing Meadows. After his viral infection, which had put him out of action for the tournament in Cincinnati, the Austrian entered a tennis court for the first time - the Lower Austrian now has at least a week left until the start of the US Open.

"I'm on the right track. If everything goes according to plan, it looks good that I will be fit for the first round at the US Open, "the Austrian said on Sunday after an examination. It turned out that his illness was one viral infection, it would take about two weeks from the start of the disease to get fully fit.

Signs similar to last year

Nothing seems to stand in the way of starting the last Grand Slam tournament of the year. Thiem's manager Herwig Straka also sees it this way: "I would say that he has never been questionable and is even less so now. Nevertheless, it is of course not ideal preparation."

But Thiem didn't have that either last year. What followed was perhaps the best match of his career that the fourth place finisher in the quarterfinals lost to Rafael Nadal in the tiebreak of the fifth set.

Thiem is hoping for a similar scenario this year. "I did it then and I will do it again this year," said the 25-year-old in Cincinnati. The US Open draw will take place on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. Central European Time.
