First of all, there is Simona Halep . The Romanian had expressed her concerns about participation in the US Open 2020 early, recently canceled her appearance in Palermo at short notice (and very much to the annoyance of the organizers in Sicily). Halep's reasoning: She feels uncomfortable on air travel in view of the circumstances caused by the corona pandemic. In the USTA press release, however, she now leads the Frauenfeld.

Bianca Andreescu should also be there. The Canadian, who defeated Serena Williams in the final last year, was barely able to play professional matches after her triumph and was repeatedly plagued by injuries.

Somewhat surprisingly, the promise of Angelique Kerber . Kerber is still missing from the last preparatory tournament before the US Open, the Cincinnati WTA Premier Mandatory Event, which will also be held in New York City, as is Julia Görges . Kerber has been trained again by Torben Beltz, with whom she won in Flushing Meadows in 2016.

And so Ashleigh Barty , as of now, is the only really absentee. The Australian world number one had decided a few days ago not to compete in the US tournaments.
