Day seven of the US Open women's competition turned out to be a day of surprises. First Angelique Kerber failed because of a brilliant Jennifer Brady, then Yulia Putintseva threw Petra Martic out of the tournament, before Petra Kvitova had to give up after a round of 16 defeat against Shelby Rogers. Only Naomi Osaka, one of the big contenders for the title, lived up to her favorite role.

The Japanese only had problems in her round of 16 duel with Anett Kontaveit towards the end of the match and left several match points. In the end, however, Osaka secured the victory and made it into the round of the top eight with 6: 3 and 6: 4. The Asian will now face Kvitova conqueror Shelby Rogers, in the second quarter-finals of the upper half of the draw, Yulia Putintseva and Jennifer Brady meet.

Williams and Kenin in action

Today, Monday, Serena Williams and Sofia Kenin will fight for the remaining places in the quarter-finals. Williams meets the Greek Maria Sakkari, on whom she surprisingly failed at the Western & Southern Open, Kenin is up against the Belgian Elise Mertens.
