Angelique Kerber took a long time to make her decision. But now it's clear: the Porsche brand ambassador will play the US Open in New York. On Sunday she gets on a plane to the USA and ends the tennis tournament break caused by Corona with her start at the Grand Slam tournament in Flushing Meadow (August 31 to September 13). This was announced by the 2016 US Open winner in an interview with the Porsche Newsroom.

Kerber's international breakthrough in New York

For the 32-year-old Porsche Team Germany player and three-time Grand Slam winner, the US Open symbolizes two important milestones in her career: in 2011 she made her international breakthrough in New York with her entry into the semi-finals, and in 2016 she became the Number 1 in the world rankings - as the first German since Steffi Graf in 1997.

“I associate a lot of emotional moments with the US Open. So it's all the nicer for me to start again after the long break. For me, the anticipation of the new start predominates, even if a lot will certainly be different this year, ”she told the Porsche Newsroom. The last few weeks of training went well. She feels fit and well prepared, but she knows “that everything is starting from scratch. That's why I don't have too high expectations, but look forward to the challenge of finally being able to play matches again ”.

Kerber's chances of a successful tournament are not bad at all, as Ashleigh Barty, Simona Halep, Kiki Bertens, Elina Svitolina and Belinda Bencic, some of the top players, did not start in Flushing Meadows. Julia Görges and Andrea Petkovic will also skip the second major of the year.
