It was Serena Williams who had the greatest trouble, who fell behind early in both sets in her match against Kristie Ahn - and still prevailed 7: 5 and 6: 3 in the end. Williams is aiming for her 24th Grand Slam success in singles in New York City. In the past two years she was in the final, but lost to Naomi Osaka in 2018 and to Bianca Andreescu almost a year ago.

The afternoon was rather relaxed for Sofia Kenin: The winner of the Australian Open 2020 had an easy time with Yanina Wickmayer, winning 6: 2 and 6: 2. Madison Keys was in an even more hurry, beating Timea Babos 6-1 and 6-1 in just 55 minutes. Keys was in the final of the US Open in 2017, but had no chance against Sloane Stephens.
