A round of 16 match couldn't be more confidently contested: Elina Svitolina, number one on the seeding list and title contender at the WTA 500 event in Doha, did not dwell long with the Japanese Misaki Doi, fixed with 6 after a little more than an hour: 1 and 6: 2 move into the round of the last eight. The second German in the second round, Angelique Kerber, has meanwhile already been eliminated. The three-time Grand Slam winner was defeated by Estonian Anett Kontaveit in two sets in the round of 16. Kontaveit now meets the number four of the tournament, Petra Kvitova, who didn’t stay long with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Muguruza fights Sabalenka down

The last 16 duel between Garbine Muguruza and Aryna Sabalenka lasted much longer. The former had actually already served on the match win in round two, but Sabalenka managed to take the last exit in this match, managed the rebreak and forced a decisive set in the tiebreak. In this, the Spaniard proved her comeback qualities: Muguruza was able to catch up a break deficit, made the break himself and served to a three-set success after almost two and a half hours.

In the quarter-finals, Garbine Muguruza will meet the Greek Maria Sakkari, who clearly had the upper hand against the American Madison Keys. Her compatriot Jessica Pegula, who bought her quarter-final ticket after a two-set success over Jelena Ostapenko, did better.
