WTA Luxembourg is no longer taking place: "We no longer feel comfortable working with the WTA"

The WTA 250 event in Luxembourg will no longer take place in 2022. This was announced by the traditional hard court event in Europe a few minutes after the final of this year's edition on social media. Differences with the WTA are the reason for the end of the tournament.

Clara Tauson had not yet had the opportunity to really celebrate her second title on the WTA tour, when a message overshadowed the events in Luxembourg. As the organizers of the WTA 250 event announced minutes after the last rally of the 2021 edition, this will be the last of the traditional tournament for the time being.

The reasons for this are differences with the WTA, as tournament director Danielle Maas explained: "We will no longer organize a WTA tournament. This is a big change. But we no longer feel comfortable working with the WTA," said Maas Luxembourg daily newspaper. "The WTA chapter closes," the medium quoted the tournament director as saying.

End after 25 years

Ubitennis.com quoted the tournament director as saying: "The quality of the tournament as we imagine it, the family aspect and everything that goes with it there is no more around. That is why we have decided to leave the WTA after 25 years. We are happy to close this chapter that we no longer enjoyed. "

After exactly 25 years, a piece of European tennis history comes to an inglorious end. In the past 25 years, the WTA event has been won by Kim Clijsters, Victoria Azarenka, Venus Williams and Caroline Woniacki, among others. Most recently from the only 18-year-old Clara Tauson, who also has the potential to earn a rightful place in this list of names. Starting next year, an invitation tournament is to take place in Luxembourg, just as the story began 30 years ago.
