Successful start for Iga Swiatek at the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto: The world number one defeated Ajla Tomljanovic in the second round with 6: 1 and 6: 2. In the first round, the reigning French Open winner benefited from a bye.
Swiatek thus extended her impressive series on hard court: the 21-year-old has been unbeaten on this surface since mid-February, when she lost to Jelena Ostapenko in Dubai. The two-time Grand Slam winner then triumphed in Doha, Indian Wells and Miami.
Gauff beats Rybakina
Reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina has already had to give up in Toronto. The Kazakh lost to Cori Gauff, who was tenth, in a gripping game after almost three hours of play 4:6, 7:6 (8) and 6:7 (3).
Defending champion Camila Giorgi is still in the tournament after beating Elise Mertens 6:3 and 7:5. Her final opponent from a year ago, Karolina Pliskova, is also in the round of 16: The Czech made short work of Amanda Anisimova in a 6-1 and 6-1 win. The Czech now meets Maria Sakkari, who already qualified for the round of 16 on Tuesday (local time).
