Jarry, who won his first ATP tournament in Bastad last week, suffered a 1-2 loss at the start. Zverev controlled the game up to 5-2 before he had to accept a break himself. A little later, however, he served successfully.

In the second set, Jarry kept up with the 2: 2, before the number five in the world made four games in a row. In the second round, number two on the seed list will meet either Marco Cecchinato (Italy) or Federico Delbonis (Argentina) on Thursday.

Previously, Jan-Lennard Struff had made another round . The Warsteiner defeated the Brazilian Thiago Monteiro 6: 1, 6: 3 in his opening game at Rothenbaum. Struff now meets Pablo Carreno Busta (Spain), who defeated Yannick Hanfmann (Munich) 7: 6 (7: 5), 6: 4. Rudolf Molleker (Berlin) is also still in the tournament.

Zverev is back in Hamburg for the first time since 2016. After his Wimbledon exit, he complained about the smoldering dispute with his ex-manager Patricio Apey and criticized coach Ivan Lendl. On Wednesday there is a double with brother Mischa.
