Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic struck again

It was easier than expected - especially since Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic did not go as favorites in the final of the women's doubles competition at the Australian Open 2020 according to the seed list. The Hungarian-French duo, who had eliminated J ulia Görges and Ashleigh Barty on the way to the final, and later also the two young Americans Cori Gauff and Catherine McNally, beat tournament favorites Su-Wei Hsieh and Barbora Strycova 6-2 and 6: 1.

The final was played under the closed roof due to the prevailing heat, Babos and Mladenovic seemed much more alert than their opponents, and did not get a hangover even after winning the first round. After only 72 minutes of play, Mladenovic hammered a backhand return down the line to defend the title.

Regardless of the outcome of this match, it was already clear that Hsieh would again take the lead in the WTA double world ranking starting next Monday. Kristina Mladenovic and Timea Babos will be able to live well after their second triumph in Melbourne.
