Australian Open: Joel Schwärzler already out in junior competition

U16 European champion Joel Schwärzler was eliminated in round 1 of the junior competition at the Australian Open 2023.

At the start of the junior tournament in Melbourne, the 16-year-old lost 4-6, 5-7 to Australian wildcard player Pavle Marinkov.

The top seed here is the Swiss Kilian Feldbausch, who confidently reached the second round with 6:1, 6:3 against Thomas Nicholas Gadecki.

Schwärzler was the only starter from Austria among the youth. He is currently ranked 33rd in the ITF Juniors Ranking, higher than ever. The Australian Open was his first appearance at a major tournament.

Schwärzler won the U16 European Championship last year.
