Oscar Otte was eliminated from the Australian Open

28-year-old Otte from Cologne, who surprisingly made it into the round of 16 as a qualifier at the US Open, lost his second round match in Melbourne against Italian Lorenzo Sonego, who was 25th, despite a strong start 6: 2, 2: 6, 3: 6. 1:6.

Otte actually had the best memories of Sonego. During his sensational run to the round of 16 in New York last September, he surprised the Italian with a four-set win in the first round.

Olympic champions Alexander Zverev (Hamburg/No. 3), Dominik Koepfer (Furtwangen) and Yannick Hanfmann (Karlsruhe) are still required in Melbourne on Wednesday. On Thursday, veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber (Augsburg) will also be fighting for a place in the third round. All three German participants in singles, on the other hand, failed in the first round.

Krawietz and Mies without any problems

The German parade doubles Kevin Krawietz/Andreas Mies (Coburg/Cologne) returned to the Australian Open with a win on the Grand Slam stage. The two-time French Open winners won their first joint major appearance since the US Open 2020 7: 6 (9: 7), 6: 3 against Santiago Gonzalez / Andres Molteni (Mexico / Argentina) and reached the second round . They didn't have to fend off a single breakball.

At the beginning of last year, Mies had to undergo cartilage surgery on his knee, which resulted in a long break. In the meantime, Krawietz played successfully with the Romanian Horia Tecau and qualified for the ATP Finals with his partner.

The two tennis professionals, who triumphed in Roland Garros in 2019 and 2020, had previously competed together in Melbourne. In 2020 they failed in the first round. The "KraMies" celebrated their comeback after more than a year last week at the ATP tournament in Sydney, where they reached the semifinals.
