Hanfmann prevailed extremely confidently against the local heroes - 6: 2, 6: 3, 6: 2 was the end result against the world number 103.
He had celebrated his premiere title on the tour in Adelaide last week and had come with correspondingly high expectations.
But Hanfmann determined the game from the start, while Kokkinakis always seemed a step too late or unwell on the ball.
The 30-year-old Hanfmann had only had to play his way through the qualifications in Melbourne. Well, in Round 2, a top game against Rafael Nadal awaits.
The two had already played against each other at the French Open in 2019, where Nadal won 6: 2, 6: 1, 6: 3. In Melbourne, Hanfmann could have a little more chances with his strong serve and the fairly flat, fast game.
