And the world ranking third had to fight mightily against Sandro Kopp, number 801 in the ATP ranking. In the end it was 5: 7, 6: 3 and 6: 0 for the tournament favorite.

Kopp started the match much better and already had a breakball at 1-1, then two games later he succeeded. But Thiem immediately compensated. At 5: 4, the Lichtenwörther then had a 15:30 bright spot when serving his 19-year-old opponent, who showed a lot of patience on the defensive, especially at 30:30, and forced Thiem to make one of the many mistakes without need in round one. Which then led him to a 5: 7 loss of set.

Kopp also had a break chance in set two, but Thiem fought back and made it 3-1, had the match under control from here and allowed Kopp only two games.

The game lasted 1 hour and 56 minutes in very windy and damp conditions. After his opening win against Lucas Miedler on Wednesday, Thiem has two wins; Kopp after his opening success over David Pichler in a 1-1 draw.

In the morning Jurij Rodionov had already won 7: 6 (7), 0: 6 and 6: 4 against Lenny Hampel. Afterwards, the weather puts a spanner in the works for the rest of the day.

In the evening Jürgen Melzer will play against Marko Andrejic and Lucas Miedler against David Pichler.
