The organizers received a corresponding approval on Tuesday from the Department of Home Affairs and Sport. The traditional ATP tournament benefits from a new regulation in the Hanseatic city, which from September 10th will again allow open-air stadium events with more than 1,000 people under tight conditions.

"The traditional tennis tournament at Rothenbaum will be the first sporting event with a larger number of spectators in Hamburg. I am pleased that in this case we can go beyond the limit of 1,000 visitors," said Hamburg's sports senator Andy Grote on Tuesday: "Today from the Senate The decision made is an important signal. We were able to take another step towards normality in sport - prudently and responsibly. "

According to the new regulation, the approval of more than 1,000 spectators for outdoor sports events is possible in individual cases in the future if the event takes place at an event location without a closed roof structure with more than 10,000 permanent seats if possible. In addition, the venue must have secure entrances and exits and an unlimited supply of fresh air. There is a ban on alcohol.

Hamburg tournament in the week before the French Open

The 114th edition of the classic clay court had been postponed from July to September due to the corona pandemic and will now take place in the week before the French Open . The tournament of the ATP 500 series has a first-class field of participants this year. In addition to five top 10 players, another seven professionals from the top 20 have entered. Germany's number one Alexander Zverev is not among them.

Parallel to the new regulations in the Hanseatic city, a working group at the level of the heads of the state and senate chancelleries has started its work, which deals with the uniform treatment of spectators at nationwide sporting events. She should submit a proposal by the end of October.
