It was not entirely unexpected, the recent appearances by Dominic Thiem were too mixed. Nevertheless, the 6: 3, 6: 4 victory by Lloyd Harris was of course a surprise, especially in terms of clarity. /

Especially when it came to the return, Thiem could not get anything, Harris made 29 out of 30 points when the first serve came, plus 23 winners hit Thiem.

"I'm super, super happy," said the world number 81. in the on-court interview, "He's by far the highest ranked player I've ever beaten." And further: "I admire Domi very much, so that's a very special feeling for me." Only last week Harris celebrated his first top 20 win by defeating Stan Wawrinka in Doha.

Thiem: "Don't play at my best level"

"I had trouble getting his serve back," said Thiem, meanwhile, confirming the statistics. "And I made too many mistakes from the baseline. I said a few days ago that I wasn't playing at my best level. That is not enough against the players in this draw." Thiem had not underestimated his opponent, had already praised Harris before the game and warned himself about the good results of the 24-year-old lately.

Thiem did not want to accept any excuses either. "I didn't have any pain in my foot, I just have to relax a bit to be fresh on the sand," he explained. He had already canceled his appearance at the Masters tournament in Miami before his match. Obviously I'm in a difficult phase at the moment, it just wouldn't be the right thing to go to Miami, "he said after his bankruptcy." At the moment I'm in no way in the best shape.
