Nick Kyrgios is annoyed by Time Violation

Nick Kyrgios took on the umpire in his match against Harry Bourchier at the Murray River Open on Wednesday. The Australian was given a time violation in an extremely contentious situation. He did not want to continue playing at first, but won in straight sets shortly afterwards.

At the score of 6: 2, 5: 5, 40-30 from Kyrgios' point of view, chair referee Nacho Forcadell issued the warning because of time play, even though the 25-year-old actually wanted to serve:

It is Kyrgios' first professional tournament in which he himself has to go to the podium with towels to wipe off his sweat. He hadn't played a match on the ATP tour for about a year. Because the way between the points was too long for him, Kyrgios kept wiping away the beads of sweat with the balls. Usually Kyrgios is one of the faster players on the tour

After the warning, Kyrgios decided not to continue playing and called the referee Cedric Mourier to the pitch. This assured Kyrgios that he would not have to pay any fine for the situation. Only then was Kyrgios persuaded to continue the match. Before that, Kyrgios hadn't found nice words for Forcadell.

Nevertheless, Kyrgios reached the round of 16 with a 6: 2, 7: 6 (7) and after three set balls blocked off. There he meets Borna Coric. "I just want to play by the rules," said Kyrgios after the match. "I didn't want to play again until it was clear that they wouldn't punish me because the ATP always gives me a treat." The association has often fined him.

Before Kyrgios' victory, ex-Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka reached the next round. In the first match of the Swiss since the Paris Masters 2020 he won against Mikhail Kukushkin 4: 6, 6: 3, 6: 1. Wawrinka now meets Alex Bolt. If Wawrinka's trainer Daniel Vallverdu has his way, this is the start of the 35-year-old's last attempt to win titles in major tournaments. The Australian Open is due to start on Monday, but some players have to go into isolation due to a positive corona case.
