Roger Federer's cancellation for the ATP Cup earlier this year came as a surprise. Didn't it mean in advance that Federer had to take part in the new ATP team event - in return for "his" Laver Cup being included in the official ATP schedule?
Federer justified his rejection with a heavy heart due to the need for a break and recovery from the stresses of the previous season. However, nobody seemed really angry with the maestro, at least publicly - an alleged agreement or not.
For ATP boss Andrea Gaudenzi, Federer's absence in the new ATP Cup was annoying right at the beginning of his term in office, but no reason to be upset. Will Federer play for it next year?
