Roger Federer's cancellation for the ATP Cup earlier this year came as a surprise. Didn't it mean in advance that Federer had to take part in the new ATP team event - in return for "his" Laver Cup being included in the official ATP schedule? /

Federer justified his rejection with a heavy heart due to the need for a break and recovery from the stresses of the previous season. However, nobody seemed really angry with the maestro, at least publicly - an alleged agreement or not.

For ATP boss Andrea Gaudenzi, Federer's absence in the new ATP Cup was annoying right at the beginning of his term in office, but no reason to be upset. Will Federer play for it next year?

Gaudenzi to Federer: "No idea how you can move like this"

"I spoke to Roger before I was elected," the Italian told ubitennis.com and tennisactu.net . "I told him: Roger, I resigned 17 years ago and I have no idea how you can move the way you do. I watched your matches on TV and I have no idea what your secret is. I was exhausted when I was 30, mentally and mentally, "said the former number 18 in the tennis world. "To play at this level, at this age, is only possible with non-worldly talents like him. So I can't complain if he misses a tournament."

Rather, he looks at the positive sides, says the 46-year-old. "I am grateful that he is still playing. He could have resigned a long time ago and is still playing. I was a professional myself and can say: It is not that easy. Of course we would like to see him play every week, but that is impossible. So we should be happy that he still plays at all. Be grateful to him for what he gives us, wherever he plays and whenever he feels like playing. "

Should Federer compete in the ATP Cup next season, he would be 39 years old.
