The 24-time major winner from the USA will also be absent from the Masters tournament in Miami (from March 24, 2021). Williams gave a recent oral surgery as a reason for rejection. "Miami is a special tournament for me because it is my home," she is quoted as saying. Williams lives just a few miles from Miami, in Palm Beach.

Williams has won the Miami Open eight times, most recently in 2015.

In the women’s category, the entire world’s elite are basically at the start in Miami, led by world number one Ashlegh Barty in front of Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep.

With Novak Djokovic , Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Roger Federer, four players from the top 6 are missing for the men. Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas lead the field here, ahead of Acapulco winner Alexander Zverev.
