Kerber set a fast pace against the too hesitant Friedsam and was already leading 3-0 after eleven minutes. Her opponent had chances that she couldn't use. After 35 minutes, Kerber converted her first set ball to 6: 3. In the second round, the tiebreaker had to bring the decision that Kerber forced in their favor after 1:40 hours.

The last match before the US Open was played in the last 16 at the Australian Open at the end of January. Kerber then put a thigh lesion out of action before the tour had to take a five-month forced break due to the corona pandemic.

Last year, Kerber in New York failed in the first round. In 2016 Kerber won her second Grand Slam tournament in Flushing Meadows, after the Australian Open in the same year. In 2018 she triumphed at Wimbledon.
