Defending champion Bianca Andreescu will not take part in the US Open either. The 20-year-old Canadian gave as the reason for her cancellation the lack of preparation for the tennis event due to the corona pandemic. This means that the Grand Slam tournament, which begins on August 31, will take place without last year's winners, as Rafael Nadal will not participate either.

Andreescu defeated superstar Serena Williams in the final last year. She wants to concentrate on her fitness and only return to the court when she is able to play her best tennis, according to the world number six.

Before that, world number one Ashleigh Barty (Australia), Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe), world number five Elina Svitolina from Ukraine, who was only two positions behind her, Kiki Bertens from the Netherlands, and Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova had canceled the women's competition.

In addition to the 19-time Grand Slam winner Nadal (Spain), Swiss Roger Federer is also missing from the men. Novak Djokovic (Serbia), on the other hand, decided to participate as did the German number one, Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) .
