The world number five beat Federico Delbonis 6: 1, 6: 2 and 6: 4, in round 2 he meets the Australian Christopher O'Connell.
Medvedev used five of his nine break chances and in turn fended off Delbonis' two opportunities. When the first serve came, he also made 86 percent of the point.
Last year Medvedev had also reached the final in New York after an amazing summer and lost there in five sets against Rafael Nadal. Above all, he caused a stir with his provocation of the audience - this year, without an audience, things are a little quieter for him too.
Dimitrov, Berrettini, Raonic continue
Also on: Last year's semi-finalist Grigor Dimitrov (6: 4, 6: 3, 6: 1 over Tommy Paul), Matteo Berrettini seeded six (7: 6 (5), 6: 1, 6: 4 against Go Soeda), Felix Auger-Aliassime (6: 3, 6: 7 (7), 7: 6 (8), 7: 6 (8)) against Thiago Monteiro), Milos Raonic (6: 3, 6: 2, 6: 3 against Leonardo Mayer), Roberto Bautista Agut (6: 4, 6: 4, 7: 6 (3) against Tennys Sandgren).
Dominic Thiem had previously made his opening game successful: He also benefited from the abandonment of his opponent Jaume Munar after the first two sets.
Andy Murray won the day: The long-injured Scot, formerly number 1 in the world and currently ranked 115th, beat Yoshihito Nishioka after a 2-0 set deficit and a match point after 3 hours and 41 minutes of play.
