Muguruza and opponent Nao Hibino were initially the only players who were allowed to compete punctually at 5 p.m. local time, the rest of them were sent back to the dressing room for around an hour due to rain.
The world number 16 also appeared there. To be mentally still in the first few minutes, she was quickly 3-0 down, but then made eight of the next nine games. Final result: 6: 4, 6: 4, after the transformed match point, the 26-year-old Spaniard blew through powerfully. Literally too.
She now meets Tsvetana Pironkova.
Siegemund leaves too many opportunities
On the other hand, Laura Siegemund was eliminated against Elise Mertens, who was seeded at 16. It was 2: 6, 2: 6 in the end, and the popular phrase that the game was much closer than the result would suggest, applied in this case. Siegemund had a total of nine breakballs, but could not use a single one; Mertens, meanwhile, made use of all four of her options. She won six of the seven games that went beyond debut. Shortly before the end of the almost one and a half hour match, Siegemund had another three chances with a 0:40 to get back - but she left them
