Angelique Kerber is in good shape almost two weeks before the start of the US Open. In the second round of the WTA tournament in Cincinnati / Ohio, the Kiel woman defeated the Olympic third-placed Elina Svitolina (No. 4) 7: 5, 2: 6, 6: 4 and thus ended her negative series against the Ukrainian. Kerber had her last victory to date against Svitolina in 2016 - since then there have only been defeats in the seven subsequent clashes.

"That means a lot to me, she's such a great player. She played great," said Kerber: "I fought my way through, it was important to stay in the match after the second set and play point by point."

The 33-year-old continues in the round of 16 against former French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia) or Jennifer Brady from the USA (No. 13). Against Svitolina, she used the first match point to win in a duel with ups and downs and many breaks.

In addition to Svitolina, Bianca Andreescu, another seeded player, had to pack her bags early on Wednesday (local time). The Canadian lost to Karolina Muchova 4: 6 and 2: 6.
