For Maria Sakkari there were two reasons to be happy on Thursday: On the one hand, the Greek fixed her first participation in the WTA finals , on the other hand, she made it into the quarter-finals at the WTA 500 event in Moscow. The reason for this, however, was not a very pleasant one, as her opponent in the round of 16, Anna Kalinskaya, had to give up due to an injury when the score was 2: 6 and 0: 1.

The 26-year-old now has to deal with Simona Halep. The former world number one defeated Veronika Kudermetova in the last match of the day with 6: 1 and 7: 6 (4).

The greatest hope for a Russian home win, however, is still represented in the tournament: French Open winner Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is waiting with Marketa Vondrousvoa, who defeated Lesia Tsurenko 6: 3 and 6: 3 on Thursday, in the round of the last eight but a far from easy task.

Meanwhile, the German Andrea Petkovic is eliminated . Her conqueror Anett Kontaveit will compete on Friday with Garbine Muguruza, who is second. In addition, world number two Aryna Sabalenka and Ekaterina Alexandrova will meet in the quarter-finals.
