The better start in this round of 16 match, however, got the German Kerber, who earned one more break in the first round and was supposed to make 1-0 sets with 6: 4. Her opponent Ostepenko was unimpressed, won the second set and was finally able to equalize 6: 3.
In the third round, a lot initially looked like the experienced Kerber would advance. The Bremen woman, who had benefited in the second round from a task of number three in the women's tennis world, from a task by Simona Halep, managed the first break of the set and in the meantime pulled to 3: 1 of it.
Sensitive sixth game
Although Kerber had to accept the rebound, the decision in this game was made in the sixth game. In this Ostapenko was able to fend off six breakballs and put it 3: 3. Kerber should not recover from that, with 4: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 4 Ostapenko finally made it to the quarter-finals.
Jelena Ostapenko now meets the Czech Karoline Pliskova.
