It is rare enough that the two top seeded women actually meet in the final of a WTA tournament. All the more regrettable when, like on Monday in the Foro Italico, the defending champion, Karolina Pliskova, and the tournament favorite, Simona Halep, can only give a short guest appearance. Because Pliskova, who defeated Johanna Konta in the final in 2019, had to give up after 32 minutes of play when the score was 6: 0 and 2: 1 for Halep.

For Halep it was the 22nd career title. The Romanian will travel to the French Open in Paris as a big favorite. Most recently she was able to win the clay court tournament in Prague. In Roland Garros, Halep will be in first place in the absence of world number one Ashley Barty.
