How many Christmas cookies are there for Andy Murray in 2020? We fear: not many. Because the 33-year-old recently had to recover from a small shock. "After the French Open, I stood on one of these machines that weigh the body fat," explained Murray in a talk with ex-colleague Daniela Hantuchova. "And that wasn't good." Murray then laughed and put it into perspective: "It wasn't good compared to when I was younger." But at that moment it became clear to him that (in terms of fitness) he had to go back to where he was before. Yes, he worked "pretty hard", "but I could have done a lot more. I could have eaten healthier, slept better."
Murray had to tackle an operation on the hip after the Australian Open 2019 and more or less ended his career - but returned in the summer. Since then, the Scots have been up and down, he won a tournament in Antwerp a year ago, but in 2020 his body pinched here and there again. Murray is currently number 122 in the world.
Murray: "Finding out what else I can do"
He may never "become number 1 in the world" again, "but I want to do everything again as I did when I was number 1. To find out what I can still achieve." Because that was exactly what preoccupied him: No, of course he is not overweight, but he could be in better shape.
Murray had recently said that in the course of his career he had gone too much over the pain threshold and not allowed himself any time off. As far as physical fitness is concerned, he now obviously wants to build on old times. Because, according to Murray, you lose a bit of speed in old age without being able to do anything about it. As for the force aspect, one could very well come back to the old level. It is clear, however, that you have to work harder in old age to stay in shape.
