The Swiss beat Italian newcomer Jannik Sinner 6: 3, 6: 2 in a duel between two wildcard players, thus entering his second final since his comeback in 2018. In February Wawrinka was in Rotterdam in the final, but had lost there against Gael Monfils.

In Antwerp, he had defeated Feliciano Lopez and Gilles Simon during the week, both in three sets. In the final he meets the winner of the game Andy Murray against Ugo Humbert.

But for the 18-year-old Sinner, it was a week of success: the world ranking 118. Thanks to his victories over Kamil Majchrzak, Gael Monfils and Frances Tiafoe, he will be among the top 100 in the world for the first time on Monday. At the beginning of the year he was still listed outside the first 500.
