ATP Cup is postponed by one day

After long discussions between ATP, WTA, Tennis Australia and the players, a new calendar has been created for the tournaments in Melbourne Park. The reason for this: the 72 actors who have to stay in the hotel for 14 days due to the air travel with people who have tested positive for COVID-19 - without the possibility for the remaining participants to be able to train at least five hours per day on the facility in Melbourne Park. /

The Australian Tennis Association thus confirmed corresponding reports in the Australian media.

In particular, an extra tournament for the players in the tough quarantine is new (3rd to 7th February), so a total of three WTA tournaments will take place in the week prior to the Australian Open.

The ATP Cup - with Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev, among others - and the two ATP events will be postponed by 24 hours: the tournaments will start on February 1 with an expanded field of 56 players, the ATP Cup will start on February 2. February.

Gaudenzi: "wanted to be as fair as possible"

"It's a challenging time for the players in tough lockdown and we, together with the WTA and ATP, are doing everything we can to help," said Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley. "The changes to the preparatory tournaments are intended to give the 72 players a little extra time to prepare. We will also give them special attention in terms of training sessions, fitness and ice baths."

WTA boss Steve Simon also said that "our friends from Tennis Australia and the ATP" are given credit for finding these solutions. "Our biggest goal was to be as fair as possible to the players who came out of the tough quarantine," said ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi.
