Zverev has a bye at the start, in round 2 he meets Lloyd Harris or a qualifier. /

Harris (ATP No. 49) in particular would be quite a challenge at the beginning: The South African is playing his strongest season to date and has already won over Dominic Thiem and Denis Shapovalov in his run to the finals in Dubai. Two weeks ago he won against Rafael Nadal in Washington.

Zverev comes to Cincinnati with a 33:11 record in 2021, with three titles, including his third Masters tournament victory in Madrid. And of course the triumph at the Olympic Games.

Zverev is still waiting for the first individual victory in Cincy

Cincinnati has not been a good place for Zverev so far: In six main field appearances, he is still without a win, in 2020 he lost to Andy Murray.

Top seed at the Western & Southern Open is Daniil Medvedev (ATP No. 2), he is waiting for Brandon Nakashima or Mackenzie McDonald. The second-placed Stefanos Tsitsipas meets Sebastian Korda or Laslo Djere.

Andy Murray is also there thanks to a wildcard, he is playing against a qualifier. Jan-Lennard Struff meets John Millman.

Novak Djokovic not in Cincinnati, Nadal, Federer, Thiem are also missing

World number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic is not there, he is recovering from the Olympic hardships for the US Open, where he wants to be the first player since Rod Laver to make the Grand Slam. Rafael Nadal (foot), Dominic Thiem (wrist) and record winner Roger Federer (knee) are not at the start due to injury.

Strong qualification in Cincinnati

The qualifying draw in Cincinnati is very busy. Richard Gasquet, who meets Fernando Verdasco in a duel between two oldies, is at the top of the list. Also there: Carlos Alcaraz (against Thiago Monteiro) and Dominik Koepfer (against Andreas Seppi).

The cut for qualification was 98th.
