The trip to Munich this time was not a very worthwhile one for Alexander Zverev. Already in the quarter-finals it was over for the former winner, against Ilya Ivashka he served to win the match in the second round. "A match that I should never lose," Zverev judged after the lost game against the world number 107, in which he also made 14 double mistakes. "At some point I lost my movement and no longer knew how to get the ball into the field," mused Zverev afterwards .
Well: New game, new luck. Zverev also has fond memories of Madrid, in 2018 he won the title in the final against Dominic Thiem. It is questionable how the elbow holds, he has had problems here since the French Open last autumn, Zverev revealed in Munich.

And his first opponent is no stranger: his name is Kei Nishikori, formerly number 4 in the world and, like Zverev, once a finalist of the US Open. Nishikori is slowly making his way back after his long injury, the Japanese currently ranks 43rd in the world. In Barcelona he had just recently achieved the remarkable feat of taking off the first set 6-0 from Rafael Nadal, but it was 2: 6, 2: 6. The fact that he can play on clay is nothing new. Nishikori has already celebrated two tournament victories in Barcelona, out of his twelve. In Madrid he was also in the final once (2014) and twice in the semifinals (2015, 2016).
At the beginning he won here against Karen Khachanov in three sets.
