Ion Tiriac has given up the reins in Madrid

At the age of 82 you can slow down a little. We can only speculate whether this was the reason that Ion Tiriac ceded the license for the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid to the IMG agency. In any case, in addition to the event in Miami, IMG now has a second of the only nine 1000 events in its portfolio. And that is more important than ever in times like these - because ATP boss Andrea Gaudenzi is planning a further upgrade of the Masters tournaments. These should extend over two weeks in the future.

Ion Tiriac celebrated some successes in his youth in professional tennis, especially in doubles alongside Ilie Nastase, with whom he won the French Open in 1970. The Romanian won only one single title - also in 1970 in Munich at the MTTC Iphitos.

Tiriac was best known in Germany as the manager of Boris Becker, whom he accompanied for almost a decade after his first victory at Wimbledon. Tiriac was also instrumental in hosting the Grand Slam Cup in the Munich Olympic Hall, an event that gave the best players of the year in the four majors an additional opportunity to compete against one another. And earn a lot of money in the process.
