Tsitsipas had finished the great run of Dan Evans in the semifinals, who had won against Novak Djokovic in the round of 16 and confirmed this victory against David Goffin in the quarterfinals. After his sensational victory over the eleven-time Monte Carlo champ Rafael Nadal , Rublev also showed his dominance against Casper Ruud in recent months.
He now wants to prove this for the first time in the finals of a Masters tournament, because despite the successes in the 250s and 500s, it was the small flaw that Rublev had so far: that it has not yet reached the very big tournaments for the very big wins. Most recently Rublev had reached the semi-finals in a 1000 tournament for the first time in Miami, but was inferior to the later champ Hubert Hurkacz there. "That was due to my emotions," said Rublev in retrospect. "If you want to learn, you have to improve it." This week he had his emotions under control, the 23-year-old explained, "that's why it's going so well". Therefore, he still won against Nadal when he turned the second set, and also in the semifinals against Ruud. "I didn't go nuts there either, I stayed focused."

Tsitsipas: "Still a lot of strength left"
Opponent Tsitsipas, meanwhile, had a very relaxed week in Monaco - he only celebrated a two-set victory on the way to the final, and Dan Evans also had no chance in the semi-finals at 6: 2, 6: 1. "I still have a lot of strength left," he announced accordingly.
The starting position before the final is pretty even: 3: 3 in a direct comparison between Tsitsipas and Rublev, 1: 1 here on clay. Both are still waiting for their first victory in a 1000 tournament. Tsitsipas has already won the 2019 ATP Finals - a 500, 1000 or Grand Slam tournament is still pending.
