It was two and a half years ago that Julian Knowle contested his last double on the ATP tour: in autumn 2017 together with Alex Peya in St. Petersburg. No wonder that the Vorarlberg is listed on the ATP side as "Inactive" and therefore without a ranking. At the ATP Tour 250 tournament in Montpellier, however, Knowle's lightning comeback, who was actually only there as a coach from Dennis Novak. In detail, Austria's number two left Emil Ruusuvuori from Finland on Tuesday.

With that, the now 45-year-old has now been given a place in the double tableau, thanks to the retirement of German Tim Pütz. Knowle / Novak were the only “Alternates” and thus moved up to the 16 grid. However, the task will not be easy: the two Austrians meet the British couple Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski, who are in fourth place. With Jürgen Melzer, a compatriot Knowles is already one round ahead. Melzer competes with Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

However, this week there is a player who has a few more months under his belt than Julian Knowl: e the Indian legend Leander Paes . He reached the quarter-finals together with Matthew Ebden at the home tournament in Pune.
