Denis Shapovalov continues his run of success at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome

Denis Shapovalov and Pedro Martinez Portero started this Thursday at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome. The young Canadian prolonged his great performance from the US Open and prevailed 6: 4 and 6: 4. Shapovalov will now face French Ugo Humbert in the round of 16.

He delivered one of the big surprises of the day in the afternoon, taking the Italian Fabio Fognini out of the tournament. This also lost his second match after his comeback. Last week, the Italian was number one in the ATP 250 event in Kitzbühel against the qualifier Marc-Andrea Huesler. Against Humbert, Fognini couldn't really build on his performances from the previous year, with 7: 5 and 7: 6 (4) the Frenchman made it into the round of the last 16.

Nadal against Lajovic

Diego Schwartzman is also in this. The Argentine was not able to convince recently in Kitzbühel, but now seems to have found his form again. 6: 4 and 7: 6 (1) the number eight of the tournament prevailed against the Australian John Millman. Schwartzman will now meet the winner of the game between Andrey Rublev and Hubert Hurkacz.

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal's opponent in the round of 16 has also been determined. The world number two presented himself in brilliant shape yesterday against the US Open semi-finalist Pablo Carreno Busta. Surprisingly, Nadal now meets Dusan Lajovic, who was successful in three sets against the service giant Milos Raonic.

In the evening, Gael Monfils and Dominik Köpfer as well as Casper Ruud and Lorenzo Sonego will meet.
