Things are moving quickly in Shanghai - actually a good thing for two players who love risk, like Thiem and Basilashvili. The match, however, depends a lot on the service - and the courage to defend patiently and at the right time. /

Thiem managed the first break of the match, but he awarded a 40:15 for a 3: 1 lead with some wild forehand shots. At another break at 5: 3, the 26-year-old did better and served.

The world ranked 26th Basilashvili looked briefly knocked when Thiem broke again at the start of the second set, but then stayed on. In the end, though, patience and good defense, Thiem made the second break 5-2. Basilashvili came back again, in the end Thiem had to pay, but helped himself with two good first serves.

An important figure from the statistics: the 79 percent of first serves that Thiem put into the field. He then made the point in two out of three cases. At Basilashvili it was only 62 percent - and only three out of five point wins afterwards.

In the relationship between winners and mistakes without need, both Thiem and Basilashvili were in the negative range - Thiem at 13 to 20, Basilashvili at 16 to 22. However, again not taken into account: the forced mistakes.

Thiem now against Berrettini

Thiem will meet Matteo Berrettini on Friday, who was successful against Roberto Bautista Agut. The game is scheduled as a second match after 12.30 p.m. CEST. Once they both played against each other, the previous year in Roland Garros, where Thiem had to go over four sets.

Roger Federer is also on. However, he had to fight more than Thiem - opponent David Goffin had five set balls in the first set, but could not use any. Federer now meets Alexander Zverev or Andrey Rublev.
