Dominic Thiem did not even have to work for a full hour in the Caja Magica on Tuesday evening, then his return to the tour was already over: 6: 1, 6: 3 it was after 58 minutes of play against the American Marcos Giron, who himself proved to be a grateful starter. On the one hand, because he is not really a clay court expert, on the other hand, because the day before he stood on the field with Pablo Andujar for almost three and a half hours. /

"That certainly played into my cards," Thiem explained after his success. But he was also generally satisfied with his performance. Rightly so: he brought 20 winners in the short playing time, 12 of them with the forehand, 6 with the serve, 2 with the backhand, mistakes without necessity he made 14 pieces, whereby he was harmed on the backhand.

Nevertheless, even the perfectionist Thiem still has an eye for improvements. The balls have to come into the field longer, the mistakes become fewer, so the world number four after the victory. "But I'm very happy with how the match went."

Thiem never in need with his own serve

After a double and forehand error and the following 0:30 right at the beginning, Thiem was actually no longer in trouble with his own serve. He only gave eight points in total for his own service, in just eight service games - a strong rate. There were also four breaks, only a single game went over the debut - the last when Giron initially defended three match points in a row, but then made two more mistakes.

Thiem seemed to be there for the entire match despite the clear course - it is also a prerequisite for his game, as he explained afterwards. "I need 100 percent intensity and energy for my game. I am not the type who serves my way through a mach, only needs a low intensity and still wins," explained Thiem, recalling Rafael Nadal. "I need 100 percent in every aspect of my game."

Thiem with a 3-0 record against Alex de Minaur

In the round of 16 in Madrid, too, especially since he has an opponent in front of him on Thursday, the Australian endurance runner Alex de Minaur, who is similar.

Against de Minaur, currently 24th in the world rankings, Thiem has held himself harmless in previous duels: It's 3-0 for the Lichtenwörther, Thiem decided the last duel in the quarter-finals of the US Open 2020 in clear three sentences. And then set out to get the title.

There are worse memories.
