Ivo Karlovic: resignation after US Open? Dr. Ivo is not quite sure yet

It was an unusual picture in the past two weeks: The tournaments in Newport and Los Cabos made it easy for their ex-champ Ivo Karlovic, and the 42-year-old Croat showed that he can still keep up: He won in Newport his first round match, before losing to the top seeded Alexander Bublik in three rounds, in Los Cabos he lost at the start against Jordan Thompson mainly because he only used one of his four break chances - the Australian, however, three of his four.
There was confusion in the context of the tournament in Los Cabos about a possible end of the career of the former world number 14. Karlovic will resign after the US Open, the organizers initially said .
Karlovic denied to sportklub.hr that he did not know where this information came from. He has been plagued by thoughts of resignation for some time, but has not yet made up his mind. Karlovic had only played very few tournaments since the beginning of the corona pandemic and was passed through accordingly in the ranking, currently he is only listed at rank 203.
Karlovic: "If I play well, I'll think again"
After his match against Thompson, he declared himself again on the subject of resignation. "My ranking has gotten very bad and it looks like I'm going to step down after the US Open," he said . "But it is still possible that I will change my mind if I play well by then or if I do well at the US Open."
The problem for Karlovic: With his current ranking he would not get into the qualifying tournaments of the upcoming events around Toronto, Cincinnati and Co., he would also have to rely on wild cards here. Will the tournament directors take pity on this - or even get free tickets for the main draw? It would be desirable for Ivo and his fans.
