"And when people ask me my age, I count backwards. I'll be 41 the next birthday," Ivo Karlovic joked just a few days ago on the sidelines of the lawn tournament in Newport. But the ravages of time, it apparently gnaws at the 42-year-old - so the world record holder for the most aces beaten (13,698) will end his career after the US Open in 2021.

At least that's what Los Cabos tournament director Geoffrey Fernandez, who gave Karlovic a wildcard for the hard court event in Mexico, announced during the draw ceremony: "Ivo has told us that he would like to resign after the US Open. We are very glad he did was the first champion of our tournament. It's worth saying goodbye like that. "

Wildcard at the US Open?

An official confirmation from Karlovic is still pending. The Croatian service giant has only won two matches on the ATP tour this year. Not least because of this, "Dr. Ivo" slipped to 200th place in the world rankings.

Accordingly, Karlovic would have to fight his way through the qualification at the US Open. However, it seems quite realistic that the organizers of the fourth Grand Slam tournament of the year will offer the eight-time ATP title holder a wildcard for his last tournament.
