The 30-year-old Cologne Mies has to pass due to knee problems. The "extremely bitter" message was confirmed by Mies to SID by video message on Wednesday. Krawietz (Coburg) will start with Yannick Hanfmann in the doubles competition (Karlsruhe).
Mies was actually supposed to play for the German team in the ATP Cup, but was no longer able to participate in the 2-1 success against Canada early on Wednesday morning . "I saw a knee specialist again after the game and showed him my MRI images," Mies said via video: "He also advised me again not to play here for the time being and to pull out of the Australian Open."
He will stay with the German team this week and support them. Then he will fly home and discuss with specialists whether an operation is necessary. Mies, who won the French Open for the second time with Krawietz last year, has had the problems for several months.
