Bianca Andreescu will travel to the US Open as defending champion

Bianca Andreescu's career is very special. There is, for example, the meteoric rise that the young Canadian made last year when she also won the US Open after the triumphs at the WTA Premier 5 events in Indian Wells and Toronto. But there is also the injury odyssey with which the first 20-year-old has been struggling since. After the China Open in October last year, the world ranking sixth could only play two games - and only play one to the end.

Andreescu had to cancel all tournaments until the interruption of the WTA tour due to COVID-19 - including the Austrialian Open - due to a persistent knee injury. But this is supposed to be over, said Andreescu coach Sylvain Bruneau, in an interview with TSN : "To be honest, we are very pleased with how the injury has developed in recent weeks and that it is now already over."

The news that the organizers are now planning to hold the US Open at the end of August naturally caused great joy in the Canadian camp: "She hasn't played a game since October, so she missed having a lot to do with others We were a bit worried that there would be no tennis or tournaments for the rest of the year, "said Bruneau. Andreescu was "enthusiastic" when she heard that the US Open should take place, since she has many good memories of the tournament.

No spectators - less pressure?

Good memories, which at the same time put some pressure on the shoulders of the young Canadian, will travel to New York as defending title - and thus great hunted. "It is not easy for any young player to come back and defend a title for the first time. It is not that she has already done it like Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Serena, for Bianca it is new territory. We will but certainly prepare for it, "said Andreescus Trainer. An advantage of this mission could be that there will be no spectators at the US Open, which will make the entire event a bit more reserved.

"We'll see, but maybe the fact that it will be a little more reserved means in a way less pressure," said Bruneau. At the same time, however, this is also one of the very big challenges for the Canadian, who knows how to use heated moods: "One of the reasons why she is so good at the Fed Cup is that she loves energy, so, yes, it does will be part of the preparation of how to deal with this new type of competition where there are no fans.
