Osaka beat Misaki Doi 6: 2, 5: 7 and 6: 2. In set two, the world number ninth had made up a 2: 5 deficit, but then had to go into overtime. Osaka had reached the final of the Western & Southern Open the previous week, but had to cancel their final due to a thigh injury.

Doi is not a stranger either and an uncomfortable opponent in round one: she already had match point against Angelique Kerber at the Australian Open in 2016, but Kerber turned the game and then won the tournament.

Osaka now meets the Italian Camila Giorgi.

Meanwhile, US teen star Cori Gauff has left . The 16-year-old lost against 31 seeded Anastasija Sevastova 3: 6, 7: 5, 4: 6. In the end, Gauff was able to fend off three match points, and her forehand ended up in the net on the fourth.

Kerber on, Maria and Korpatsch out

Angelique Kerber and the top seed Karolina Pliskova had already successfully started the tournament. Kerber now meets compatriot Anna-Lena Friedsam.

Also on: Petra Kvitova, Petra Martic, Anett Kontaveit and Elena Rybakina.

Tatjana Maria and Tamara Korpatsch were eliminated. Maria lost to 13 seeded Alison Riske 3: 6, 2: 6, Korpatsch lost to Catherine Bellis 7: 6 (13), 3: 6, 2: 6.
