Bresnik trusts Thiem with five to ten Grand Slam titles

Dominic Thiem's victory at the US Open did not bypass ex-coach Günter Bresnik either. Thiem still trusts a lot.

Even if everything is not the same as it used to be: Günter Bresnik has of course already watched the US Open final between Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev. And it classified objectively, in terms of level, as "one of the worst finals I've seen in my life," as Bresnik explained in an interview with the New York Times . But what was understandable for him: "There were two young players who tried to do something they had never done in their lives." With the better ending for Thiem , who won in five dramatic sentences, at the end with cramps . /

"In the end, the better technique prevails in a match, I think. And Dominic has the better technique. And has been the player since 2016 who has earned a Grand Slam title the most without the 'Big Three' having a say "said the 59-year-old.

Bresnik: Best age for tennis players between 26 and 33

In the end, it may have been the mixture of Bresnik's school and that of coach Nicolas Massu that made Thiem the player he is today. The change of coach in spring 2019 was a "big step" and a "damn hard decision", according to Thiem, who values the independence and the now given opportunity to make free decisions - outside and inside the field.

"Of course I owe a lot to Günter. He taught me all the punches I have. On the other hand, I felt that there are so many little parts in my game that I can improve and that was exactly that Nico helped me, especially when it comes to improving and making progress on faster surfaces, on hard courts. " Thiem first drew attention there in Indian Wells in 2019 with the final victory over Roger Federer , followed by victories in Beijing and Vienna as well as the final at the Australian Open this year. And now the victory in New York.

Bresnik believes that many more could follow. "You could think that winning the first Grand Slam title at the age of 27 is very late," said the teacher from Vienna. "But I've been saying it for ten years: the best time for a tennis player these days is between 26 and 33. If Dominic wins five to ten Grand Slam titles in the next five years, I honestly wouldn't be surprised."
