US Open: Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva win the double title

Final triumph in New York: Laura Siegemund was the first German to win the women's double competition at the US Open since Claudia Kohde-Kilsch in 1985. The 32-year-old from Metzingen and her partner Vera Zvonareva from Russia defeated number three Nicole Melichar / Xu Yifan (USA / China) 6: 4, 6: 4 and celebrated the sensational tournament victory.

Siegemund, who stormed into the final with Zvonareva as an unset double, had already triumphed in the US Open in 2016. Now she and her partner eliminated the number seven seeded Viktoria Azarenka / Sofia Kenin (Belarus / USA) and the two defending champions Aryna Sabalenka / Elise Mertens (Belarus / Belgium) at the first joint tournament and earned the performance honestly at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"They were the better team today, I can only congratulate them," said Melichar after the match.

The German-Russian duo started highly concentrated and managed an early break to make it 2-1. Siegemund played outstandingly at times and after 41 minutes the first set was wrapped up. In the second round Siegemund / Zvonareva immediately relieved their opponents of their serve and could not be denied the great triumph.
