"Because of the situation caused by the corona virus, I made this difficult decision," wrote the 2004 winner on her Instagram page.

"I'm very sad because I've waited so long for these tournaments. But the pandemic changes every plan," said the 35-year-old. They hope that the situation "will be better in the next competitions". With the Czech Barbora Strycova, another player will also do without the event in the Big Apple.

Before that, world number one Ashleigh Barty (Australia), Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe), world number five Elina Svitolina from Ukraine and only two positions behind her, Kiki Bertens from the Netherlands, had all canceled the women's competition. Among other things, the 19-time Grand Slam winner and defending champion Rafael Nadal is missing from the men.

Wimbledon winner Simona Halep also only wants to make a decision after the current tournament in Prague.
